Seek First

Matt 6:33  But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all of these things shall be added to you.

To seek means to be absorbed in the search of something.  It requires a persevering and strenuous effort to attain something.  It is constantly going after that which is important.  First means first in time, value, and rank.  First precedes all others.  It is a fresh start. First has the place of priority over everything else.

There are two types of seeking—wrong-seeking and right-seeking.  Wrong seeking is going after any other way but God’s way for your life.  Wrong seeking focuses on natural things.  Yes, you need natural things in your life, but when you continually set your heart on natural things, eventually that will produce worry in your mind.

Matt 6:25, 31  Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink: nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
31 Therefore do not worry saying, ‘What shall we drink?’ Or ‘What shall we wear?’

Why does God tell us not to worry?  Worry distrusts the providence of God.  It makes you think that God is not in control.  It burns up energy luring you into a realm of unbelief.  Worry will not change anything, except your faith posture.  God’s answer to worry is to seek His Kingdom and His righteousness. That’s what right-seeking is.

Phil 4:6,7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Right seeking results in peaceful living.  What are you supposed to be seeking?  His Kingdom and His righteousness.  Right seeking will cause you to be thankful.  It will take away your anxiety and worry.  Right seeking will cause you to see things from God’s perspective which will give you the confidence to rely upon Him alone.

Make a choice today to seek God first in everything that you do. Persevere in your pursuit of  His Kingdom and His righteousness.  Let that be the priority in your life.  Be free from your anxiety and worry.
